In remembrance: Retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant Mrs. Bertha Korpinen Standard, RN
Harmony Standard wrote a tribute to her mother, Bertha Korpinen Standard, in recognition of her service to the country during World War II, and especially of her compassion for all living creatures.
A U.S. Navy Lieutenant and R.N., Bertha Korpinen Standard was a longtime resident of St. George. She was born Nov. 12, 1915, and died March 10, 1998.
"Few people can identify their talents at an early age, yet my mother did," said Harmony Standard. "As a young girl growing up near Maine blueberry fields she once found an injured grasshopper. With compassion and empathy she wrapped it in a soft leaf, cradled it lovingly, and was determined to restore it to health.
"'It was then I knew I should become a nurse!' she told me, when I was a girl.
"Bertha was perceptive and recognized the great design in a seemingly insignificant event. And knowing my mother she would dedicate another lifetime to her profession if only she could."
